Man hit at bus station ‘lucky’
Aman was hit by a bus at the Suva Bus Station yesterday morning. Luckily, the bus was reversing at a slow pace.
The man was knocked to the ground but gathered himself after that. Pictures and a video of what happened has made the rounds of social media.
This, according to the Suva City Council, was unfortunate but avoidable.
“The council has two workers per rank at the bus stations who control commuter traffic to and from the ranks,” said Suva and Lami special administrator Isikeli Tikoduadua. “People know where the crossing areas are and where it is prohibited to do so.”
Mr Tikoduadua said from the reports gathered by the city marshalls, the man had allegedly walked into the area where pedestrians were not allowed.
Council workers and other commuters were quick to aid the man. Mr Tikoduadua said signs were clearly marked and cones displayed to avoid such mishaps. He said the council would put more cones from Monday.
“We at the council are doing our best. People need to realise that at a bus station, you cannot just step into a section where the buses are moving,” he said.
“People are requested to follow the path which has been marked for them. We have council workers allowing people to cross.
“If we all do as we are supposed to, accidents such as this morning can be prevented.”
Avikash Singh, a commuter, said rules needed to be followed. “Pedestrians in areas where buses are moving are definitely prohibited,” he said.
Sailosi Matuku, a juice vendor at the Suva Bus Station, said it was lucky that the man did not lose his life.
