Two doctors, who are also best friends, are offering free consultancies beginning from tomorrow to those who lost their jobs as a result of COVID-19.

Nephrologist Dr Amrish Krishnan, based at the Kidney Hub in Suva, had thought that helping people in the midst of his own struggles would help make the world a better place in these trying times. Beginning tomorrow, Dr Krishnan and Dr Ahmed Shakeel of the Kidney Hub in Nadi will offer their services without any charges to Fiji Airways workers who had been terminated from their jobs in the past week.

From July, Dr Krishnan said their services would be open to those who also lost their jobs in other industries during the pandemic.

“When I started reading about people losing their jobs I thought of ways that I could help out not because we are a big multi-million dollar company but because we thought if we pitch in a little bit and other people will pitch in a little bit together we can help a lot of people,” Dr Krishnan said.

“I travel a lot between Nadi and Suva and I see these Fiji Airways and Fiji Link staff every week and with the thought of them having to go home, I thought that I was going to start for the month of June while in July we will open it up for others that have lost their jobs during the pandemic. “In Nadi we offer five patients everyday Monday to Friday at no cost, there is no consultation fee, we bear the cost of that. “In Suva, we will be opening up slots for two patients per day, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday we will cover general practice and specialty areas.”

Dr Krishnan said it was important for everyone to look into others needs and find ways to conquer together through this pandemic.

“The main message is that right now we need to have each other’s back and it doesn’t mean that only businesses that are thriving should be helping, you could be in a fairly challenging position yourself but do as little as you can to lend a helping hand,” he said.

“Fiji is a beautiful nation, and through these challenging times it has been heartwarming to see people go above and beyond for others.

“One person can’t help everyone, but if everyone helps a few, imagine how many will be assisted.

“There is a powerful saying, alone we are just a drop, and together we can be an ocean.”
