Doctors, Vets Moved by Unique Fijian Spirit

The move by some private doctors and vets to give of their services free typifies the unique Fijian spirit.

It is motivated by compassion and love, the products of God’s spirit that influences people to do good. In times like this when we are battling to survive the COVID-19 crisis these doctors and vets are an inspiration to the nation.

They belong to a rare group whose hearts are in the right place. In a world of capitalism where revenue and profit are the key words, these professionals go against the tide.

In Fiji, public healthcare is free and comes from a big chunk of the National Budget.

As we know, it is limited to certain medical procedures.

But people, who can afford medical insurance, seek overseas treatment for procedures whether they are available here or not.

But many Fijians, if they can afford it, will see a private general practitioner in their neighbourhood for basic consultation, minor illnesses or even emergency cases.

It cuts travel time and it’s more convenient. The GPS will refer them to specialists if need be otherwise they can treat them in their surgeries.

In many countries you are required to have a GP. The hospitals deal with emergencies and acute cases, Many ordinary Fijians go the hospitals even for consultations and minor sickness. It causes long queues in the Outpatient Departments and pressure on doctors, nurses and staff.

That’s why private doctors who have come forward and offered their services free of charge, deserve recognition. Vets too, who have started to offer free visits and consultations to pet and animal owners, should also be recognised for their generosity.

While animal welfare is not so serious a business here and therefore the market is not that big for vets, the goodwill some of them have shown will go a long way to encouraging people to take care of their pets and animals.

The wonderful gesture shown by these doctors and vets is a fine example of a true Fijian patriot.

When they put the welfare and wellbeing of people ahead of their livelihoods, they are empowering their fellow Fijians, especially those in need, to have hopethat the situation will get better.

The spirit of God, the source of all good, has inspired these men and women to show compassion and love.

In a multi-religious country like ours, it should come naturally - and we are seeing it happen in many parts of Fiji.

One of the doctors sums it up well when he says: “This is the Fijian way - the way the world should be”.
