Multi sector partnership benefitting Fijians

Multi-sector partnership has again come to the fore to ensure that essential service is provided to the people. Two cases highlighted by the Fiji Sun include the planned relocation of squatters from Vatuwaqa in Suva to Makoi in Nasinu and the shipment of relief supplies to Ono in Kadavu.

Squatters at the informal settlements of Nanuku and Veidogo had resisted moves to remove them from the sites to make way for new development.

But they have now agreed to be relocated to Makoi where they will be provided lots which will be legally registered to them.

The breakthrough is made possible by a partnership between the landowners, K Bindhi Brothers Limited and Government.

Government has set aside $12 million for the relocation project. K Bindhi Brothers will carry out the subdivision at its own costs.

Premila Kumar, Minister for Housing, has applauded K Bindhi Brothers. She too should be commended for brokering the deal which will see 300 families moving to new homes they can proudly own.

The other partnership example is about members of the Ono Foundation living in California donating $20,000 to buy food and other necessities and the Government providing the ship, Bai ni Takali to ferry the supplies for the victims of Tropical Cyclone Harold.

In both cases, the partnership clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of working together to achieve a common purpose – and that is to meet the needs of the people. It is cost effective and results in achieving the desired outcomes quickly.

It is particularly useful at a time when we are facing an economic crisis caused by COVID-19 by enabling us to share the burden of providing help and relief.
