TAXI DRIVER, 48, ON ATTEMPTED RAPE CHARGE REMANDED IN CUSTODY

A 48-year-old taxi driver has been remanded in custody by the Magistrate­s Court in Suva.

Bera Yalimaiwai appeared before Magistrate Waleen George, charged with one count of attempted rape.

It is alleged that on May 26 in Suva, the taxi driver attempted to rape a 19-year-old woman in his taxi.

The complainan­t was waiting for a parcel to be dropped off when the accused offered her a ride to assist her.

It is also alleged that the accused forcefully took her around Queen Elizabeth Drive and Nasese area before taking her to an unknown place and tried to rape her.

Police prosecutor Constable Tavinesh Naicker served the accused with a full phase of disclosure­s.

Magistrate George ordered the accused to file a bail applicatio­n if he wished to seek bail.

The matter has been adjourned for mention to check on bail applicatio­n on June 12.
