TAXI DRIVER, 48, ON ATTEMPTED RAPE CHARGE REMANDED IN CUSTODY

A 48-year-old taxi driver has been remanded in custody by the Magistrates Court in Suva.

Bera Yalimaiwai appeared before Magistrate Waleen George, charged with one count of attempted rape.

It is alleged that on May 26 in Suva, the taxi driver attempted to rape a 19-year-old woman in his taxi.

The complainant was waiting for a parcel to be dropped off when the accused offered her a ride to assist her.

It is also alleged that the accused forcefully took her around Queen Elizabeth Drive and Nasese area before taking her to an unknown place and tried to rape her.

Police prosecutor Constable Tavinesh Naicker served the accused with a full phase of disclosures.

Magistrate George ordered the accused to file a bail application if he wished to seek bail.

The matter has been adjourned for mention to check on bail application on June 12.
