Man offers up land for agricultural purposes to help affected families

Vonivate Tawase Driu has offered his 12 acre piece of land for families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, who are willing to utilise it for agricultural purposes.

The 50-year-old, who currently lives with his family in Melbourne, Australia, owns a portion of land situated at Namulomulo in Nadi.

The father of seven is originally from Nawaka Village. His oldest daughter, Frances Tuisalato, was among the many flight attendants who lost their jobs recently.

Mr Driu said he was inspired to assist airline and hotel workers who had lost their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

“I had intended to offer that 12 acre land because I thought of other families in Nadi who have lost their jobs. They have bills, rent and mortgages to pay,” he said.

“Many of them have come from the outer islands and they have no place to plant their food.

“My daughter is a flight attendant and she also has been terminated from her job. Now she is taking care of the farm which was the best option for her.

“This assistance will help families to utilise their skills and help generate some income for them to support themselves.”

Mr Driu said people have been contacting him and spaces been allocated for them to vegetables and root crops. He encourages other landowners in Nadi to also help out people in need if they able to during these difficult times. have plant
