Tonga Emancipati­on Day holiday to be marked today

Nuku’alofa: A public holiday will be observed in Tonga today to commemorat­e Emancipati­on Day, the day Tonga’s first Christian King, Siaosi Tupou I, officially abolished serfdom in Tonga in 1862.

Originally the June 4 public holiday this year fell on Thursday, so it was moved up to be observed today. This is in accordance to a Public Holiday Act, stating when these holidays fall on a Thursday, Friday it will be celebrated the following Monday.
