Man charged with attempted murder of sons, arson, denied bail

The Magistrates Court in Nasinu denied bail for the 38-year-old charged for allegedly trying to take his sons lives in a house fire last Friday.

Pranil Alvin Singh appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele. He was represented by John Rabuku while Police Constable Setareki Mocevakaca appeared for Prosecution. The accused is charged with one count of arson and two counts of attempted murder.

It is alleged that the accused tried to murder both his children, aged 10 and one year nine months old, at their home in Lumi Road, Nadawa.

Magistrate Ratakele issued a domestic violence restraining order against the accused for the safety of the two children.

He said the matter was to be transferred to the High Court because it was an indicatable offence.

Defence

Counsel, Mr Rabuku said that under 104(1)(a) of the Criminal Act, his client suffered from mental health issues. He said that the accused tried to take his life twice already. The accused’s counsel told the court that his client needed to be admitted to the Saint Giles Hospital for examination. Magistrate Ratakele ordered that the defence provide a medical report to the court in order to make his decision.

Prosecution

Police Constable Mocevakaca told the court that it was not a normal practise that the accused be held at the Nasinu Police Station.

The matter will be called at the High Court in Suva on June 12.

Singh has been remanded in custody with his case transferred to the High Court where his bail application will also be assessed there.
