The Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam Rakiraki has invested $400,000 to build a doublestorey classroom block. During the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday, Penang High School Principal Ashwinesh Sharma said investment would cater for its growing school roll.

“We had given a whole building to our technical college (located within the school) but our numbers at the high school are growing,” Mr Sharma said.

“When that building was given, we turned our school hall into classrooms.

“Now the hall is not enough to cater for our ever-growing numbers.

Rakiraki TISI president San Gounder said the project had been in the pipeline for some time.

“We had a carnival last year where we were able to raise $120,000.

“With that we have been able to kick-start the project. “We hope not to do the project in stages but to finish in a few months.”

Mr Gounder said he was thankful to all the donors who gave.

The building is expected to finish early next year.

It will accommodate four classrooms and a computer lab.

Mr Sharma said they do not have computers for the lab and hoped to engage with those who could assist them. “This is for our future and not just for today.

“I was also a student of the school so this project means a lot to me,” said Mr Sharma. Goundar Shipping Limited also generously donated to the project.

Director George Goundar said: “GSL is keen on helping out the education sector in any way.

“The executives came to see me and were very upfront with no hidden agendas. “Straight away I said yes because they had no hidden or political agendas.”

The school caters for more than 400 students.
