Sofitel Managers In Lay Off

Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa at Denarau has made redundant 166 employees, including some management staff.

The resort has however allowed redundant employees a chance to speak with management over the decision.

Director Human Resource Mereoni Gusuivalu said the task was difficult, but was necessary because the resort was closed.

She said the redundancy was carried out after consultations with the Permanent Secretary for Labour Osea Cawaru and general secretary of the National Union of Hotel and Catering Employees Dan Urai. 30 days later

About 98 per cent of those employees made redundant have been notified.

“The redundancy was made on June 4, but will come into effect after 30 days from the receipt of the redundancy letters by those affected,” Ms Gusuivalu said.

“We are looking forward to meeting with them before confirming the redundancy.

“The consultation with these employees is based on seeing what they have to say about their redundancy before the confirmation is done.” The resort has offered a package of one week’s pay for each year of service.

“We have included in their letters a statement of each of their financials at the resort.

“Outstanding leave would also be paid.”

Sofitel has paid staff weekly relief packages from March 29 when the resort was closed.

Relief packages

The packages were initially offered on the basis that the employees repay the sum.

Ms Gusuivalu said the company decided to take back only 50 per cent of the sum owed.

“The relief package was mainly based on seeing that each of our employees’ family had some food to put on the table each week.”
