The Fiji Rugby Union has forwarded its budget submission to the Fiji National Sports Commission with emphasis on next year’s Olympic Games and Women’s XVs Rugby World Cup.

The FRU is preparing the Team Fiji men’s sevens team to defend the Olympic Games gold medal while the women’s sevens team has also qualified.

The Fiji Airways Fijiana XVs has also qualified to its first World Cup outing.

FRU chief executive John O’Connor said funding towards the Olympics and the Women’s World Cup top their list.

“For us the main priority is that we have made submissions in relation to the Olympics and also the Women’s World Cup,” O’Connor said.

“Those are the priorities considering what we are going through.”

Receiving the budget submission, FNSC chair Peter Mazey said, the funding applied does not cover participation costs as it has already been given out in the last financial year.

“We’ve requested the funding they’ve asked for which is over a million dollars for preparation,” he said.

“It doesn’t include the participation because that funding was already given.

“So we have that sitting in the bag ready to pay for the airfares to go and funding for the women’s World Cup in New Zealand is also part of our request this year.”

The commission will soon be meeting with the Ministry of Economy officials to discuss budget matters.
