COVID-19 Pandemic Spreads Further In Some Asian Countries

The COVID-19 pandemic spread further in some Asian countries on Saturday, with the cases crossing the 300,000-mark in India. Bangladesh reported 2856 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, dipping from last Friday’s high of 3471.

“2856 new COVID-19 positive cases and 44 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours across Bangladesh,” Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana said in a media briefing on Saturday afternoon.

“The total number of positive cases is now 84,379 and death toll stands currently at 1139 with the fresh fatalities of 44 people,” the official added.

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1014 within one day to 37,420, with the death toll adding by 43 to 2091, Achmad Yurianto, a Health Ministry official, said at a press conference on Saturday. He said that 563 more people had been discharged from hospitals, making the total number of recovered patients stand at 13,776.

The pandemic has spread to all the 34 provinces in the country. The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippine­s surged to 25,392 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 607 more infections on Saturday.

The DOH said the number of recoveries further climbed to 5706 after 252 more patients have survived the disease.

The death toll increased to 1074 after 22 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease.

Malaysia reported 43 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, pushing the total cases to 8,445, the Health Ministry said.

Health Ministry DirectorGe­neral Noor Hisham Abdullah said at a press briefing that of the new cases, five are imported, and among the local transmissi­ons, 23 are foreign nationals and 15 are Malaysia citizens.

The COVID-19 cases crossed the 300,000-mark in India on Saturday, reaching 308,993, as the death toll stood at 8,884, said the latest data issued by the federal health ministry. The ministry said that 386 new deaths due to COVID-19, besides fresh 11,458 positive cases were reported during the past 24 hours across the country.

This is the largest single day spike in the country in terms of new cases.

South Korea reported 49 more cases of the COVID-19 compared to 24 hours ago as of midnight Saturday local time, raising the total number of infections to 12,051.
