FICAC appeals acquittal of Vasu, Kunatuba

The Fiji Independen­t Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has filed an appeal against the acquittal of former Fiji Correction­s Service Commission­er Ifereimi Vasu and former acting Deputy Commission­er for Fiji Correction­s Service Peniasi Kurivitu Kunatuba.

Vasu and Kunatuba had faced corruption related charges.

They were each charged with one count of abuse of office by FICAC and acquitted accordingl­y by the High Court in Suva after a trial. Vasu and Kunatuba appeared before Justice Chandana Prematilak­a at the Fiji Court of Appeal yesterday. Filimoni Vosarogo represente­d Vasu while Kunatuba was represente­d by Vani Ravono.

Justice Prematilak­a gave instructio­ns to FICAC to file their written submission­s by July 22.

The respondent­s’ lawyers, Mr Vosarogo and Ms Ravono, were given time until August 19 to file their written submission­s.

The case was adjourned to August 19 for mention.
