The Ministry of Housing and Community Development through its Veilomani Food Bank received 100 food packs donated by Mobil Oil (Fiji) yesterday.

Permanent Secretary Sanjeeva Perara said the food bank donation would go to people in need of them.

“We have received around 2000 applications and so far we have assisted 200 people,” he said.

“It will take time to identify people who are in need of food especially those who were affected by COVID-19.”

Mr Perara said people, who lost their jobs and found it difficult to put food on the table, were the ones the ministry was focusing on. He also confirmed this was part of the ministry’s social responsibility programmes. “We want to ensure that these donations go to the right people,” he said.

He said the ministry was grateful to Mobil Oil (Fiji) for his generous donation as this would feed needy families during hard times.

Mobil Oil (Fiji) chief executive officer Adi Tamara said he wanted to give back to the community by helping people of Fiji.

“We have helped other countries like Australia by donating to food banks during the pandemic,” he said.

Mr Tamara said this was the least he could do for Fijians and he understood what those who were unemployed and vulnerable would be going through.

“It is our job to help our brothers and sisters when it comes to food bank,” he said.
