GAMES RESUME, ENJOY WITH CARE: PM

- FONUA TALEI Edited by Osea Bola

Sporting events will resume from today but organisers will need to take heed of COVID-19 restrictions, says Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

Fitness centres, gyms and swimming pools will also reopen from today but with conditions. Bainimarama made the announcement during the mandatory installation of the careFIJI phone application yesterday

“With Fiji’s outbreak contained, we can safely reclaim our status as the beating heart of rugby in the world, and welcome back football, boxing and all other contact sports as well,” he said.

“Fijians are a sporting people and I know how much it means to fans across Fiji to attend games and see our athletes in action.” Formal indoors and outdoors sporting venues can host sporting events with 50 per cent sitting capacity with physical distancing. Informal sporting events at the community level are restricted to 100 people participation only.

Policies will be reviewed by the government in the future.

“Operators must keep facilities clean and maintain contact tracing information for every person who uses their facilities by checking for careFIJI installation and keeping a manual log for those who don’t have smartphones,” Bainimarama said.

“We look forward to the cooperation of sporting event organisers and –– I can’t stress this enough –– all spectators must download the careFIJI App.”

Athletes from all levels who may be feeling unwell have been advised to stay at home.

Sports officials have been tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that symptom screenings are done and those who are sick do not play. Bainimarama hopes that with the resumption of sporting activities more Fijians will take advantage of the opportunity to take greater ownership over their health and wellbeing.
