Asix-year-old girl who dreamed of becoming a nurse died with her father in a morning fire at their home in Teidamu, Lautoka, yesterday.

Dead are Evelyn Ishwari Devi and her father, Ronil Chand, 37, a taxi driver.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said an emergency call was received at the Western Division Command Centre at the time of the incident. The National Fire Authority responded to the emergency.

Ms Naisoro said investigations continue.

Evelyn’s paternal grandmother, Madhvi Pillay, told of how her granddaughter’s last words would haunt her.

“She said to me, ‘don’t worry paati, I will come back’,” a distraught Ms Pillay said.

Evelyn’s mother is said to have suffered a similar fate at the same home three years ago, she added. “I got the call around 5.45am my sister called and relayed the news to me.

“She (Evelyn) was my pet. I looked after her when she was only a three-year-old.

“When the school closed, she wanted to spend time with her grandparents from her mother’s side but before she left she said ‘when school starts I will come back, don’t worry’.”

The family will wait for the postmortem results before confirming the funeral date.

Mr Chand’s father, Mannu Pillay, said Evelyn always spent time with her father when he was on a day off and she always looked forward to that quality time.
