No Deans: Akbar

Rosy Akbar has confirmed there would no competitiv­e sports, including the Deans Trophy competitio­n, when the second term of school resumes next week.

The Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts said it was important all school curriculum­s should be covered after the long break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There will be no competitio­n for sports in term two, ” Akbar said. When asked about the Deans competitio­n she responded: “Definitely not.”

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive John O’Connor said they would meet with Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union to discuss plans.

“We will align ourselves with what the Ministry of Education wants,” O’Connor said.

“The teachers will meet to discuss, but the bigger picture is we need to align ourselves with the Government’s directives.”

Fiji National Rugby League acting chief executive officer Don Natabe said they would also abide by Government’s directives.

The secondary schools rugby league quarterfin­als were cancelled when the first case of coronaviru­s was confirmed.

Fiji Secondary Schools Football Associatio­n (FSSFA) secretary Bimlesh Kumar also confirmed there would be no school competitio­ns in 2020

“It will not be held this year,” Kumar said.

Term two of school is scheduled to start on June 30 with Year 12 and 13 while the rest of the students to start on July 6.
