No Deans: Ak­bar

Rosy Ak­bar has con­firmed there would no com­pet­i­tive sports, in­clud­ing the Deans Tro­phy com­pe­ti­tion, when the sec­ond term of school re­sumes next week.

The Min­is­ter for Ed­u­ca­tion, Her­itage and Arts said it was im­por­tant all school cur­ricu­lums should be cov­ered after the long break due to the COVID-19 pan­demic.

“There will be no com­pe­ti­tion for sports in term two, ” Ak­bar said. When asked about the Deans com­pe­ti­tion she re­sponded: “Def­i­nitely not.”

Fiji Rugby Union chief ex­ec­u­tive John O’Con­nor said they would meet with Fiji Sec­ondary Schools Rugby Union to dis­cuss plans.

“We will align our­selves with what the Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion wants,” O’Con­nor said.

“The teachers will meet to dis­cuss, but the big­ger pic­ture is we need to align our­selves with the Govern­ment’s di­rec­tives.”


Fiji Na­tional Rugby League act­ing chief ex­ec­u­tive of­fi­cer Don Natabe said they would also abide by Govern­ment’s di­rec­tives.

The sec­ondary schools rugby league quar­ter­fi­nals were can­celled when the first case of coro­n­avirus was con­firmed.

Fiji Sec­ondary Schools Foot­ball As­so­ci­a­tion (FSSFA) sec­re­tary Bim­lesh Kumar also con­firmed there would be no school com­pe­ti­tions in 2020

“It will not be held this year,” Kumar said.

Term two of school is sched­uled to start on June 30 with Year 12 and 13 while the rest of the stu­dents to start on July 6.
