A look at the cost of our roads
Since 2013, the staff cost of Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) was less than four per cent, while the other 96 plus per cent was for fixing our roads.
Despite the massive injection of funds towards fixing our roads, given the decades of lack of maintenance, there is still a lot the FRA needs to do to fix our roads. Why?
As highlighted yesterday, in 1999 the then Public Works Department had requested that they be given $50 million annually to undertake routine and periodic maintenance of our roads. They were given less than half of what they had requested.
This meant the PWD could not do the maintenance which was required to keep our roads in good condition.
Out of what was given to PWD and then later to FRA, how was that money utilised?
