It cost the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) $21,000 to construct a single road hump. This was revealed by FRA Central Division Representative, Jese Morgan, on Friday.

During a talanoa session with the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, in Tailevu, Sawakasa villager Eliki Nadro said their road had become somewhat of a race track for drivers.

Mr Nadro said drivers who come from Vanua Levu and Suva frequent their roads on a daily basis and flout road rules.

“The roads running beside the villages are being misused by motorists from Vanua Levu who go to Suva and those from Suva going to Vanua Levu and the Lomaiviti Group. We are pleading with motorists to be cautious of villagers, especially children,” Mr Nadro said. “Now we walk on the grass on the side of the road because we fear for our lives because of the speeding vehicles.”

Mr Nadro requested the Prime Minister if road humps could be constructed along the Sawakasa Village road to safeguard the lives of the villagers and school children in the nearby schools.

Responding to Mr Nadro’s plea, Mr Morgan said the issue of road humps in Sawakasa was brought up during two previous Bose Ni Tikina meetings.

“I would like to inform everyone here today that our engineers who approve the construction of road humps have already inspected the place and have approved it,” Mr Morgan said.

“Please know that it costs $42,000 to construct two humps. We are waiting for financing for this project.”

Mr Morgan said road humps do not come cheap and the authority would construct the road humps at Sawakasa Village once funding was secured.
