Where does Fiji fit in this? Companies should join in

-

Fiji has not been immune to racial and religious vilification which was pushed using Facebook’s platforms.

This was rife during the 2014 and 2018 General Elections, but even today, there are scores of fake accounts pushing for hate and violence in the country.

Fijians, who today reside overseas, use Facebook as the means to push their hatred and regularly call for violence in the country. This is where Fijian companies need to get together and rally against Facebook. Companies in Fiji have seen what events like 1987 and 2000 did to their businesses. Open looting took place on the streets of Suva in 2000. Today, people sitting overseas are pushing for similar scenarios and they use Facebook as the platform to push that message.

Apart from ordinary Fijians, these companies that sponsor posts on Facebook, that use Facebook’s platforms to advertise their specials are given the social networking site giant the financial backing it needs to remain unchecked.

Local companies need to start a similar campaign here and pull back their advertising revenue from Facebook, if that is what is needed to get the message across.
