PM Tells Villagers: People Can’t Alter Decisions By Courts
Brother of late village headman asks why murder accused was allowed bail
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, during his tour of the Northern Division, has said that people cannot alter decisions by the Court.
The Prime Minister said this during a talanoa session in Labasa. It was in response to a question made by the family member of the village headman who died while trying to control a dispute of those who were allegedly breaking curfew during the COVID-19 restrictions.
The family member was the older brother of the late Amoritikei
Mainalulu. He questioned the law and its system and asked how could a person be charged with murder, but be given the right to be on bail.
He said his brother “lost his life while executing his service during the COVID-19 restrictions.
“The case has been brought up to the court, and there has been three court sittings. Yet the accused is out on bail.
“How is it possible that the law allows the accused to walk freely when his actions had taken a life?” he asked.
Divisional Police Commander (DPC) Senior Superintendent of Police(SSP) Eparama Waqa said the accused had been charged with one count of murder and has appeared before the court and been granted bail by the court. Mr Bainimarama added that’s the decision made by the Court.
“Once the decision has been made by the Court, no one else can alter it,” Mr Bainimarama said.
