Woman who poured hot water on de facto partner gets suspended sentence

A 24-year-old woman poured hot water on her de facto partner in anger for using her glow sheen hair gel in Samabula.

She was sentenced to two years imprisonme­nt suspended for five years to rehabilita­te.

High Court Judge Justice Riyaz Hamza sentenced the offender earlier this month.

The incident occurred on February 24, 2020, when the complainan­t was with the offender at his neighbour’s house watching a movie.

The offender threw a bottle of glow sheen hair gel towards the complainan­t after which the complainan­t noticed the offender bring a two litre jug and poured hot water over him.

The complainan­t had sustained burns to his back and arms. Justice Hamza noted that the aggravatin­g factors were the serious injuries caused to the complainan­t and that the frequent prevalence of offences of this nature in our society.

He said the offender was truly remorseful for her actions and had sought forgivenes­s from the complainan­t and his family.

He also noted that the offender and the complainan­t had reconciled.Justice Hamza ordered that the offender receive counsellin­g from the Family Court Counsellin­g Services in Suva and ordered a permanent domestic violence restrainin­g order.
