SNAKE IN CANE FIELD SHOCKS HARVESTERS
Agroup of cane harvesters at Naleba, Labasa, are still recovering from the shock of sighting of a snake in their field.
Shahil Pratap, who managed to take the video of the snake, said it was about one metre long and two inches thick.
The 20-year-old auto-electrician said they saw the black and brown coloured reptile around 3:30pm on Sunday. “There were about three labourers cutting cane and suddenly one of them saw it and alerted others,” Mr Pratap said. “We were all shocked because it was coiled up on top of the dried cane leaves.”
He said when they started talking about it then it moved slowly out of the field.
“It didn’t harm anyone or pose any kind of threat,” Mr Pratap said. “Neither one of us tried to impose any harm because we thought of the Nagigi Naag (snake) Temple which is located nearby.
“Maybe it came from the temple and so as a sign of respect we decided to leave the field.”
Meanwhile, when contacted Biosecurity Authority of Fiji Labasa office, staff confirmed that they didn’t receive any report about this finding.
However, an email was sent to their head office yesterday and they confirmed they were looking into it.
