Suva women keen to set pace at Lawaqa

The Suva women rugby team is hopeful of setting the pace against Nadroga before the men feature in the doublehead­er at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka next Saturday.

The Suva side included some Fijiana XVs players like Laisa Taga, Akosita Ravato, Mereani Moceituba and Mere Moto.

Despite having a number of experience­d players, Suva team manager Talei Turaganiva­lu said Nadroga would be the team to beat.

Turaganiva­lu indicated there were new players in the squad. “We’re pretty hopeful of a good outcome in round one and setting the pace forth em en in the doublehead­er showdown ,” T ur ag an iv a lu said.

“We know Nadroga have the size and play good rugby,Suva defeated Nadroga in last year’s round robin match but the Stallions reached the final where they lost 10-43 to Tailevu.

“Last year we played well, but the drawback this year was the COVID-19 pandemic which affected our preparatio­ns ,” she said.

“Everybody is trying to lift their fitness level and we’re managing well.”

The 2019 Skipper Cup Premiershi­p champion Suva face Farebrothe­r –Sullivan Trophy champion Nadroga in the feature match of the first round.

In other games, Tailevu plays Namosi at Thomson Park, Navua, Naitasiri faces Lautoka at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori while Yasawa take on Lautoka. The Under-19 and women competitio­n will also feature in every round of the 2020 Skipper Cup Premiershi­p.
