Man accused of malicious act pleads not guilty

The 41-year-old man alleged to have published and broadcasted false news on Facebook about positive COVID-19 cases at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital has pleaded not guilty.

Bani Dunn denied the charge of malicious act when he appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara on Thursday.

He is represented by private lawyer Jagath Karunaratne.

Mr Karunaratne informed the court that one of Dunn’s sureties was no longer in a position to fulfil his duties as a surety so they wanted a replacement surety. Defence was told to file a motion and affidavit to that effect.

The case was adjourned to August 20.
