Having an amputated leg didn’t hinder Sailovati Marauvucu from establishing a home bakery business to support his six children’s education.

The 44-year-old, a former hotel head chef, had lost his left leg five years ago after suffering from diabetes.

Mr Marauvucu is married to Selina Tirenika Dave, a Kiribati woman, and lives with his family at his village at Kiuva, Bau in Tailevu. He said after his leg was amputated, he didn’t give up, but earnestly looked for ways to generate income to support his family.

“I didn’t have any assistance after what happened to me, but with the little things I have, I opened up a small canteen,” he said.

“With the income received, I managed to support my family, especially with my children’s education. My eldest is now in Year 13.” He said he was introduced to a home bakery trainer, who helped him, start his bakery business.

“I heard about the training for home made bakery that was provided by Phil Waqainiqolo. I got in touch with him and we made a drum oven at home,” he said.

“He also taught us skills of baking bread, buns, pizza and cakes. This week (last week), I have started with my bakery business at home.” Mr Marauvucu said Fijians had no excuse whatever disabilities they may have.

“Many Fijians, who have similar conditions as I, beg for money.

You can see people with crutches begging for food and money on the streets,” he said.

“There is no excuse. If I can do it, anyone with the same condition as I am can do it too. Nothing is impossible.”
