The Jittu Boxing Stable (JBS) amateur boxers are all geared up for tonight’s programme at the Commander Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay, Suva.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, JBS chief trainer Marika Yalimaiwai said they were going to field 17 amateur boxers in tonight’s programme. “We marched into camp late last week,” he said.

“Most of the boxers are still in high school while a few have dropped out and a couple are completing their tertiary education. “Over the years this club had been educating young people to stay away from drugs, work hard and stay away from crime.

“We are still doing the same thing with these young men and hopefully some of them could get the opportunity to represent Fiji and a chance to do well in life.” Although, Jittu Estate is known for criminal activities in the past, but it has been the breeding ground for many of the country’s top boxers like Mataiasi Tagicakibau, Inoke Qarau, Paula Tuilau and Kuliniasi Vasu, Fijian Featherweight champion Krishnil Mudaliar and current Australasian Super Featherweight champion Sachin

Mudaliar.

Yalimaiwai said they were grateful to former Australian cruiserweight champion Mosese Sorovi and his wife Sala for assisting them with boxing equipment.

“We are thankful to Mr and Mrs Fuata for donating us gloves.

“We used to meet this couple during our early morning run and they saw our old torn out gloves and they blessed us with new ones. “Also, we won’t forget Tevita Mau of Hot Bread Kitchen for his assistance along with the Assistant Minister for Sports Alipate Nagata.”

Yalimaiwai said they were also grateful to the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association for moving the competition to Monday nights.

Today’s weigh-in is from 6am to 7am at the Commander Stan Brown gym and the programme gets underway at 6pm.
