CRICKET FIJI BOSS URGES MORE WOMEN TO PLAY THE SPORT
Cricket Fiji is hopeful of attracting more women to play the sport. Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Cricket Fiji chief executive officer Alex Konrote said women cricket in the country was growing.
“The interests have picked up very well and it’s thanks to our media partners for putting it out there,” he said.
“We have had parents calling us if their daughters can play.
“We’ve got mothers and daughters playing which is a good to see because we are encouraging any age group.”
Konrote said they had six women teams competing in the weekly T10 Bula Bash cricket competition.
They are Nadi, Tailevu, Serua, Moce, Ono-i-Lau and Island Stingers from Rotuma.
“Ono and Moce have stood out to be the best teams in the competition because they have majority of the Fiji reps in their teams. “And so is Nadi but the new teams like Tailevu and Serua are doing well despite having new players.” Konrote said the rise in women participation is also made possible through the hard work of their developing officers.
Meanwhile, Moce Women’s cricket team coach, Ruci Kaiwai, is urging young girls to try out the sport. “I call on these young girls who
Kelera Sovasiga are doing nothing at home, if they are interested to come and play cricket. If they do not know how to play, we will teach them how to play.
“Most of these young girls playing now, have never played the sport before but they have grown to love it once they tried it,” she added.
The Moce women’s team are not looking forward to win this tournament but to show other girls that participation in sports is better than doing nothing at home. Moce are still unbeaten and face Ono-i-Lau on Saturday.
