Focus on Olympic preps: O’Connor
The Fiji Rugby Union has gone through the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games schedule. says a senior official.
Speaking to SUNsports yesterday FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor said they were now focused on the team’s preparations. “The schedule is almost like the Rio Olympic Games in 2016,” he said.
The Olympic Games will be from July 23- August 8, next year.
Competition format
The men’s competition will take place first, running over three days from July 26-28, with the women’s competition following on July 2931, which sees the gold medal match falling on ‘Super Saturday’ – traditionally a highlight of the Games. The organising committee has reconfirmed that there will be two sessions on each competition day. As per the pre-postponement schedule, the times have been selected in the interests of player welfare to avoid the peak heat of Japanese summertime and maximise fan atmosphere and engagement. The competition will be played at the iconic Tokyo Stadium.
The race to Tokyo Olympic qualification is almost complete with 21 of the 24 teams having already secured their tickets to Tokyo.
The remaining two women’s and one men’s places will be decided at an Olympic Repechage event prior to the qualification deadline.
