Invaluable skills and experience are the x-factors for Shewin Ezebial, who has returned to toiling the land to help him and his family survive during this crisis. Mr Ezebial recently resigned from his job as properties manager at Pleass Global Aqua Safe company and opted to return to Labasa and put his farming skills to good use.

The 24-year-old of Paras Point in Vunivau, Labasa said he couldn’t afford to pay his rent, groceries and car fuel after pay cut because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I had no choice, but to return home and start with organic farming practice,” the youngest of three siblings said.

“I wasn’t discouraged or unhappy with the decision because as an agriculture graduate of Fiji National University I had the farming skills to put into use.”

His one-year experience as a farm manager at Ram Sami and Sons (Fiji) Limited was an added advantage.

“In my backyard farm, I have not used chemical,” he said.

“Instead used poultry manure, goat manure and smart organic farming methods such as pruning to increase the production of vegetables and fruits.”

His eldest sister is a Police officer and brother is physically challenged living with them.

“I face challenges daily, but I thank the Lord for the gift of talent and peace to remain calm,” Mr Ezebial said.

“To those who have lost their jobs in Suva and feel like it’s the end of the world, I would like to encourage you, never lose hope.

“Trust in the Lord and He will guide you to survive during this pandemic.”

Through the knowledge he gained from the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, his farm has attracted his neighbours attention, who are now seeking farming assistance from him.

Mr Ezebial plants cucumber, tomatoe, French bean, long bean, cowpeas and vanilla.

To those who have lost their jobs in Suva and feel like it’s the end of the world, I would like to encourage you, never lose hope. Trust in the Lord and He will guide you to survive in this pandemic. Shewin Ezebial Labasa farmer
