Sigatoka Town to Have More Parking Spaces
‘The length of the area is just below 200 metres (from St Joan of Arc School towards the riverside) to fit 110 parking spaces’
Traffic congestion and the lack of parking spaces will soon be a worry of the past for the Sigatoka Town Council.
A project by the Council is underway to construct 110 parking spaces.
At the moment, there are only 50 parking spaces.
The parking lots are earmarked to be fully operational before the end of the month.
Nadi and Sigatoka Special administrator Chair Adish Naidu said this would include the removal of the railway tracks that had not been used for some time.
“Sigatoka is a tourist town and there is no parking space.” Mr Naidu said.
“We have got that land from the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC). We have got a Memorandum of Agreement between the FSC and council,” he said.
“The length of the area is just below 200 metres (from St Joan of Arc School towards the riverside) to fit 110 parking spaces,” he said.
“The project is a cost-effective one because we are using our own resources.
“The council is using its own machineries and we are using our own workforce,” he said.
Mr Naidu added there would also be seats for the public to utilise. Meanwhile, the railway tracks were installed by the Fiji Sugar Corporation in 1912 to assist the carting of sugarcane from the upper Kavanagasau, and Olosara area.
The railway was no longer used by the FSC since the 1994 cyclone damaged the road-rail bridge.
But this was later used by the tourist train based near ShangriLa’s Fijian Resort.
