Twenty-two year-old Peniasi Ratu lives by the Bible scripture, Proverbs 19:21 - “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
Since he scored the winning penalty kick for Queen Victoria School during the Coke Zero Deans Final in 2016, he has had a colourful career playing rugby.
However, with the sport comes its setbacks as he received many injuries throughout the years playing overseas and local club games. Yesterday, Mr Ratu received the award for Baton of Honour during the Fiji Corrections Service Basic Recruitment passing-out parade. He said he had applied for recruitment to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force, however, it all fell through because of his rugby commitments.
He said his injuries prompted him to consider a career outside of rugby.
“This is God’s plan for my life. Even though I had been injured several times from rugby games, I never lost hope. I enrolled for the
Certificate course in Sports Science at the Fiji National University, but I did not complete it because I got injured. I never lost hope, I kept training.”
His father, former Police officer, Manoa Ratu, 46, praised God for the provisions in his son’s life saying even though he had wanted him to be a Police officer God’s plans never fails. The Baton of Honour award is given to the recruit who has been consistent in all areas of assessments in both theory and practice.
