Piled and Rusting Vehicles Problem

- SHALVEEN CHAND

Rusting vehicles are piled on top of each other and left at the mercy of nature at the Malolo Settlement in Nadera, Nasinu.

The Nasinu Town Council says they have no dumping area for the derelicts collected from various suburbs in the municipality.

They say an alternative venue is being looked at to transfer the derelicts to.

Residents claim the derelicts provide criminal elements a location to indulge in drug use and for thieves to hide and pounce on unsuspecting victims.

But the bigger concern is the environmental impact of the rusting cars, which are also leaking chemicals such as lead acid and lithium. Permanent secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Joshua Wycliffe, said derelict vehicles could be taken to the Naboro landfill.

He said it costs $60 a ton to dispose of waste at the landfill.

“Fines can go up to a million and five times more if it is a corporate facility. We also expect them to get a waste disposal permit to cover themselves,” he said.

Mr Wycliffe said the ministry was planning an awareness programme
