Athree-bedroom government quarters in Statham Street, Vatuwaqa was destroyed in a fire yesterday.

The house was occupied by a staff member of the Fiji Meteorological Service and his wife, who were at home when a fire allegedly broke out from one of the bedrooms at 12.40pm yesterday.

They were not able to save anything.

An eyewitness, who did not wish to be named, said she saw the couple run out of the house looking for help when the fire broke out.

“We live right next to the house that caught fire and it was just when we were having lunch that we saw the couple running out and smoke coming out of the house,” she said.

“We called the fire station as soon as we could, but they had arrived 20 minutes later and by then the fire was already spreading all over the house destroying everything inside.

“Firefighters tried their best to contain the fire but it was just too late.”

She said they were grateful that the couple made it out of the house alive.

For now, the couple will live with family members in Cunningham.

Investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire continue.
