The Suva Rugby Union signed a three-year sponsorship deal with mobile network company Digicel.

Digicel sponsored $30,000 for the operations of the SRU for the next three years as they seal the deal at the company’s headquarters in Nabua, Suva, yesterday.

The competition will be called the Digicel Koroturaga Championship and the Digicel Escott Shield.

SRU chairman Aseri Rokoura said the sponsorship would boost the competition.

“Digicel has come in time where the world and our nation are faced with this global pandemic of COVID-19 and it has affected our rugby tournaments,” Rokoura said.

“The sponsorship will assist us and also have a positive impact in reviving small businesses.

“Digicel has made this possible given Government’s approval to lift restrictions. We thank Digicel for their support and kind gesture to sponsor the union.”

Digicel CEO Farid Mohammed applauded SRU for their efforts.

“The signing today is a significant one as we are partners with a champion side like Suva,” he said.

“We always support home grown rugby and competitions. Digicel is excited to be part of the Suva Rugby club competition and we are excited of this new partnership.” Meanwhile, national 7s players are playing for their provincial unions today. Yasawa have named Napolioni Ratu (Bolaca) at first five eight against Suva while Teri Tamani is on the Suva reserve bench. Nadroga has named Sevuloni Mocencagi at centre as they face Namosi.
