Authority Urges Proper Disposal of Rubbish After Finding Tyre In Pump
The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is urging Fijians to dispose of their rubbish properly, after finding a tyre lodged in a pump at one of their Raw Water Pumping Stations.
After reports of low water inflow, WAF conducted an investigation at the Waila Raw Water Pumping Station, where the tyre was found lodged in the number 3 pump during a check of the impellers.
“We have said this in the past, but it bears repeating, that incorrect disposal of rubbish is quite a major issue and we ask the public to refrain from doing so,” said WAF chief executive officer, Barry Omundson. “Dumping rubbish wherever you want is an extremely selfish act. Once that rubbish finds its ways into our pumps and pipes, surrounding areas are badly affected because of disruptions to water supply and other services while we conduct repairs.” “Not only is it a major inconvenience to your fellow Fijians because of the downtime, it is very expensive and damaging to our operations, overall. There are a number of options available for proper disposal and I strongly urge everyone to make use of them.”
WAF also asks that Fijians practise water conservation, especially in light of drought season, and to store at least two days worth of water in case of emergencies.
