Fiji Airways Flying Fijians head coach Vern Cotter is monitoring the performance of local-based players in the Skipper Cup Premiership.

Speaking to SUNsports, Cotter said this was being co-ordinated by Fiji Rugby Union’s general manager High Performance Simon

Raiwalui.

“There are some good people on the ground in Fiji,” he said.

“We are really enjoying watching the Skipper Cup on Sky Television at present.”

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor said from an agreement with Sky TV, the main Skipper Cup match of the week, which is shown live by FBC TV, is uploaded and shown by Sky TV as a delayed coverage.

“The other thing we do is that all the Skipper Cup matches from all four venues are being uploaded on video and put into a hard drive,” he said.

“This is accessed by Cotter, the Flying Fijians coaching staff and the provincial coaches to enable them do their analysis.

“These also include the Under-19 and the women matches as well.”

Simple plan

Cotter said the COVID-19 pandemic had affected his travelling plans to Fiji especially with the quarantine regulations.

“With these complications a lot of work is now done through Zoom.”

Cotter said they were interested in all players eligible to play for Fiji and that includes those playing in the Australian and New Zealand competitions.

“An analysis data is being gathered each week on these players. Among them are Moses Sorovi of the Reds and Issak Fines of the

Brumbies.”

Cotter said for Fijian rugby to go up a notch it involves a simple plan.

“That is to get good people together. Select players who are prepared to work hard, have strong values and alignment with families, culture and beliefs, have fun and win games,” he said.

Meanwhile, O’Connor confirmed that the Skipper Cup clash between Lautoka and Yasawa Marlin gets underway at Prince Charles Park in Nadi, today.

He said the women’s game starts at 11am followed by the U19 at 1pm and men’s clash at 3pm.
