New NZ cases an eye-opener for us

New Zealand’s five new cases of coronavirus should be an eye opener to everyone in Fiji.

Apart from Fiji, New Zealand was the only country to be able to boast 100 plus days without new cases outside the quarantine area.

Now, New Zealand has once again gone into different levels of lock down. Fiji’s leadership has continued to stress that we cannot be complacent but complacency has definitely crept in.

For example, one regular at the University of the South Pacific’s gym called the Fiji Sun, very worried that no one was checking whether the patrons had careFIJI app on their phones. No one was taking down the details of those who were at the gym.

The scanner which was used to scan IDs of patrons and record who used the gym was nowhere to be seen.

Several people have reached out to us claiming that no one checked their phones for the careFIJI apps or took down their details when they went to watch a movie at the cinemas in Central Division.

I thought one of the conditions for the reopening of gyms and cinemas were that the careFIJI app should be installed if anyone wants to be in the vicinity or details of people would be taken down if they did not have a smart phone.

There are many new things about the coronavirus which the scientists are discovering every single day. This is why we continue to have these measures in place. careFIJI app has become a political issue no thanks to National Federation Party’s Lenora Qereqeretabua.

In their short-sighted approach, they are happy to put the economy of this country at stake only if it shows this Government in poor light.

People like Lenora should have urged people to download the app, but they are willing to risk peoples lives only because it is a FijiFirst initiative.

We can either learn from New Zealand’s situation or sit back and blame Government.
