Derelict ships and vehicles

Tukai Lagonilakeba, Nadi

-

Any derelict ship, boat, truck, caterpillar, bus and car that is illegally parked or dumped along any roadside in any municipality or along the country’s main highway has got an owner. It did not get there by itself.

However, there are laws and policies regulated by Government authorities.

This includes ships and boats also where the Maritime Safety Authority Fiji and Fiji Ports Company Limited, the Land Transport Authority, Fiji Roads Authority through the Ministry of Transport.

They must all make a point in locating these owners in order they be levied a fine for their removal as they are not only an eyesore but are hazards and risks to residents and all road users for that matter.

They have littered our reefs and harbours and our roadsides for decades. I personally feel that our Minister for Environment and his team who collect millions in environment levies are toothless and just sheer laziness in not issuing out notices accordingly or do they just turn a blind eye to it and pretend it is not their responsibility.

The Nausori Special administrator and his team must be congratulated for their bold stance and I wish to ask the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to make this special issue and agenda top of the list in his next Cabinet meeting.
