Teachers’ quarters provide relief for teachers living afar
Arriving late to school due to travelling all the way from Suva to Korovou, Tailevu will now be a thing of the past for five teachers of Tailevu North College.
This was after Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama commissioned five new teachers’ quarters at the Tailevu school yesterday afternoon.
School Principal John Atalifo said: “Teachers who teach in Tailevu North College live as far as Nausori and Nadera and they travel here daily because there was no teachers’ quarters here that they could live in.
“Teachers at times arrive half an hour late and they had to be penalised though it was not their fault, we have 44 teachers and only 17 teachers’ quarters and now we have an additional five.
“These new quarters’ will definitely be a game changer and we are indeed grateful to the Prime Minister and his Government for funding this project and allowing our teachers the best accommodation that they had truly deserve.”
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, while commissioning the new quarters, said no teacher should spend their days making long and difficult treks just to get to work.
“You have seen how unreliable that can be. On days with heavy rains, your teachers could find themselves stranded on the wrong side of floods affecting the Nausori and Korovou highways,” Mr Bainimarama said.
He added that it was of vital national importance that every child in the rural areas receive the same quality education that is found in Fiji’s major urban areas.
