Shaving diplomats: why we did it

Five heads of overseas missions in Fiji took on the challenge to shave their heads on Friday in order to raise charity funds for children with cancer.

More than $FJD40,000 was raised during the WOWS Kids Fiji (WFK) Shave or Save it Campaign that will assist the nonprofit Charity Foundation with its core values.

The diplomats include New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji Johnathan Curr, United States Ambassador to Fiji Joseph Cella, French Ambassador to Fiji Jean-Francois Fitou, High Commissioner of Australia to

Fiji John Feakes and British Deputy High Commissioner to Fiji Paul Welsh.

WOWS Kids Co-Founder, Taholo Kami said the campaign was the single biggest contribution made this year.

“It’s really moving that representatives from five of our major partner countries have stepped up to do something very personal for the Fijian children. It is very powerful and we are totally moved by their commitment to do this,” Mr Kami said.

“We serve every child with cancer with anything the hospital can’t do; we do it in terms of providing transportation, taking them for their hospital checkups, medications, shopping vouchers, emergency accommodations and many more,” he said.

New Zealand High Commissioner, Johnathan Curr said, “Cancer is such an enormous problem for anyone around the world.

“16 children had been lost to cancer in Fiji last year and that is too many and it is really important for us to come together to help these children and their families’ battle to beat cancer,” he said.

All five heads of missions shared the same sentiments of supporting such charity in saving the lives of children living with cancer in Fiji.
