India to Continue Playing Leading Betterment Role
India will continue playing its leading role for the betterment of humanity. This was President of India Ram Nath Kovind’s message read by the India High Commissioner to Fiji, Padmaja, during the 74th Independence Day celebration in Suva yesterday.
People gathered in large numbers at the India High Commissioner’s residence to commemorate India’s independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947.
“On this day, the youth of India should feel the special pride of being citizens of a free nation,” Ms Padmaja read.
“The ethos of our freedom struggle forms the foundation of modern India. Our visionary leaders brought together a diversity of world views to forge a common national spirit.
“When India won freedom, many predicted that our experiment with democracy will not last long. They saw our ancient traditions and rich diversity as hurdles in democratisation of our polity.
“But we have always nurtured them as our strengths that make the largest democracy in the world
so vibrant.”
Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama conveyed his congratulations
to India on the occasion.
“Our two countries have enjoyed warm and friendly relations over the years based on our historical ties, shared values and aspirations,” Mr Bainimarama said in his message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“I am confident that this will provide a foundation for deeper bilateral engagements and co-operation during these unprecedented times and into the future.
“With best wishes for continued success and prosperity, we join you and the people of India in celebrating this milestone.”
