Rookie fullback proud to end Naitasiri’s 19 -year winless jinx at Lawaqa
Naitasiri fullback Vuate Karawalevu says the 9-6 Skipper Cup win over Nadroga at Lawaqa Park, last Saturday, is so far the highlight of his rugby career.
The win saw Naitasiri end a 19year winless drought at Lawaqa Park.
Speaking to SUNsports, the former Marist Brothers High School Under-18 captain said the win was special for him and his family.
“I will never forget this win because I’m the youngest player in the team,” he said.
“I’m 19 years old and it has been 19 years since Naitasiri last beat Nadroga at Lawaqa Park. I was born the year Naitasiri last won in Lawaqa.”
Karawalevu is waiting for the borders to open so he could join the ACT Brumbies Academy in Canberra, Australia.
He signed up early this year before the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions came into place.
It is understood that he is also targeted by National Rugby League (NRL) clubs as well.
Karawalevu said to be part of the Naitasiri team is amazing and to witness the fans satisfaction at first hand is something different altogether. “This is special because straight out of high school rugby to the
Skipper Cup competition, is a privilege and to play against some of the best players in the country and win is indeed an honour.”
Confidence
Karawalevu said he was relaxed and confident playing against Nadroga because he trusted his teammates.
“They had my back covered and we all trusted in God. For me it’s all about practice that makes perfect on and off the field.
“I was happy to play right to the final whistle. It’s been a while since I played contact rugby and I’m humbled by the opportunity given by the coaching staff especially when they believed in me,” he added.
Family support
The Dravuwalu, Kadavu native with maternal links to Tau Village in Nadroga added, that family support boosts a young player’s confidence especially in achieving their goals.
“I’m forever thankful to my family’s support towards my rugby career, they have been the rock on my progress. It has always been God, family, others than self for me and with commitment and sacrifice, I believe nothing can stop us achieving what we want in life,” he said.
What’s next
“Now I’m focused on playing Suva in the next round if I’m selected to play and I’ll work on my mistakes from the Nadroga game.”
