DONORS LAUNCH LUNCH DRIVE FOR SCHOOLS

- WAISEA NASOKIA NADI Feedback: Edited by Jonathan Bryce waisean@fijisun.com.fj

Parents of Sabeto College and Sabeto Central School, who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19 pandemic, will no longer need to worry about their children’s lunches next week.

This good news comes after the school received groceries from a group of donors.

The school roll is 295. Fifty students require lunch on a daily basis and stationeries due to their parents’ loss of jobs or reduced working hours.

Self-employed community worker Shainaz Ali, with her friend Austin Matarugu and donors Nalesh Pillay and Jai Narayan, raised the funds for the lunch groceries themselves.

Sabeto College principal Shelly Imran welcomed the assistance and said she had seen positive changes in student attendance. “This initiative has motivated our students to continue coming to school,” Ms Imran said.

“Close to 50 of them are getting lunch on a daily basis.”

She also said that the school had used rent received from quarters to facilitate lunches for one week. “We started off with the help of the management,” she said.

“We had few of our parents who gave us some food items. So this is another group who have come to help us.

“We actually started off giving lunches for five days and the second one was for three days. This week we managed to give food for five days.

“Next week we will be able to sustain this initiative for another five days.”

Ms Ali, speaking about how the pandemic has been affecting the country, said: “We are all in this

together. We all can do our bit. We can feed the hungry and help the less fortunate among us.” Ms Matarugu said: “Giving also connects us to others, creating stronger communities and help

ing to build a happier society for everyone. And it’s not all about the money – we can also give our time, ideas and energy. I hope to inspire more people to come forward and be part of this good course.

“Helping others is not only good for them and a good thing to do; it also makes us happier and healthier too.”
