Matadrugu scores 4 tries in Suva’s win

The Suva women team have sent a strong message to other teams in the Skipper Cup competitio­n after thrashing Namosi 42-17 yesterday.

The toast of Suva’s win was prop Vika Matadrugu who scored four tries.

Speaking to SUNsports coach Meli Tuifagalel­e said they are focused on their next game against Nadroga.

“It’s good we got the win but we are now ready for next week against a tough Nadroga side,” he said.

“The girls stuck to the game plan and it paid off so we will be doing a review on our performanc­es.”

What happened: Suva took the lead in the 18th minute after prop Matadrugu scored a try that was converted by Mereani Moceituba for a 7-0 lead.

Namosi kept applying pressure at the Suva line and was awarded a try to hooker Cikavira Tobau, with the conversion missing as they trailed 7-5.

Suva opened up and play and Matadrugu strolled over for her second try with Moceituba’s conversion missing for a 12-5 lead. Namosi was composed on attack and scored a try to No.8 Marica Salo that was converted by Vilimaina Tinai to tie the game.

Halftime: Suva 12-12 Namosi Suva got a scrum right in the 45th minute of play and set up a move for winger Teresia Matea to score a try as they led 17-12. Suva scored again in the 55th minute of play when No.8 Selai Cika muscled her way over to give the hosts a 22-12 lead.

Matea ran in to score her second try in the 60th minute of play to give the hosts a 27-12. Matadrugu scored her third and fourth tries and take the score to 37-12.

Namosi got a consolatio­n try to Sera Bolatini to narrow the deficit 37- 17. Suva added another try right on fulltime.
