The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) have zero tolerance against those seeking to mislead and cheat Fijian consumers out of their hard-earned money.

This after the owner of Star Agencies was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after FCCC took them to court for breaches of the FCCC

Act 2010. Star Agencies had knowingly misled a customer and accepted payment totalling $4,070 for consulting services and the provision of a work visa to Australia which she knew she was neither licensed nor authorised to provide.

FCCC chief executive officer Joel Abraham said: “This is a landmark case as it is the first time that someone charged under the FCCC Act has been imprisoned upon conviction.

“While we like to have a collaborative approach with businesses to ensure that they are aware of and complying with the rules, in this instance the accused knowingly acted quite unethically.

“I believe that justice has been served and I hope that this serves as a deterrent to others who may be thinking of engaging in such acts.

“I would like to stress once again that we have zero tolerance against those seeking to mislead and cheat Fijian consumers out of their hard-earned money, especially during these trying times where Fijians are struggling financially.” The Court decided not to suspend the sentence in light of the severity of the offence and in the interest of justice.
