Bizarre statements

Dharmendra Kumar , Suva

When the FijiFirst Government is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the Opposition Members of Parliament are making bizarre statements riddled with controversies.

One such member is Viliame Gavoka saying to reinstate the Public Works Department (PWD). Let me remind him that the PWD had so many controversies when in operation.

I still clearly remember the sick leave scam. Allegations of theft and fraud and some were even convicted. PWD was also famous for the “din maro “syndrome not forgetting the tender controversies.

Let bygones be bygones. Keep our country moving forward. The politicians need to stop looking back. Unfortunately some are resistant to change.

Please embrace the changes. I agree, policies need to be reviewed and changes need to be made if there is a need, but let’s not talk about PWD.

Latest drowning

Ronnie Chang , Nadi

The sad and heart-breaking drowning of two young brothers in Nasilai, Tailevu, is indeed a terribly painful blow to their parents.

These lines are not meant to add pain and sorrow to grief and immense sadness. Could such deaths of the two young siblings have been avoided with greater parental supervision?

In a normal daily life, we witness young children walking a good distance from their parents or guardians. Such practices must stop.

Parents must learn to hold their children’s hands at all times, as pedestrians.

Similarly, in rivers, creeks and beaches, children must always be in the safe and protective clutches of the caring parents and/ or supervision of an adult.

No more, no less.

Will we ever learn?

Please pay utmost attention, and save precious young lives.

They are supposed to be newer generation leaders in our communities.

Controlling traffic congestion

Dewan Chand , Suva forthwith,

I write to strongly support the views expressed in the letter (Controlling Traffic Congestion) written by Satish Nakchad. It is highly appropriate, timely and deserves the attention of the Fiji Roads Authority to be treated as an urgent matter.
