PM Calls On Island Nations to Unite
SUVA
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is urging island nations to present a united stand on the impacts brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues affecting the region.
Mr Bainimarama made the call at the opening of the Virtual
Island Summit 2020 from Suva yesterday. The summit will have more than 100 global participants as problems and solutions facing the world today are discussed among participants and experts.
“Now, as we face these dual crises, climate change and contagion, island nations must stand together with a more united voice than ever before. So during this year’s Virtual Island Summit, I hope that each of you take the time to listen, to learn, and most importantly to be driven to action,” Mr Bainimarama said.
“Be inspired by the stories of innovation that will be shared, and take the initiative to implement real and meaningful change at home. Be the voices that urge leaders around the world to pursue an inclusive and sustainable recovery from
COVID-19, one that puts our planet on the path to net-zero global emissions.”
Mr Bainimarama said Fiji was an incubator for innovation.
He said the world was faced with international emergencies.
“We can also be at the cutting edge of sustainable development. Because we are strong. We are creative. We are resilient,” he said.
“And in the face of any challenge, no matter how great, we can adapt and innovate. We can lead by doing, and we can be the change our world so badly needs.”
Mr Bainimarama highlighted that as a result of travelling prohibitions and requirements, the Pacific was now even more in isolation. Suggestions that the island nations combine and have concerted effort serves most Pacific states well.
The Virtual Island Summit 2020 ends on Sunday. It covers all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in addition to other topics pertinent to island communities.
