Government is looking at ways to restore glory to Levuka’s historical sites and expand operations at the Pacific Fishing Company (PAFCO).

A Government delegation accompanied by members of the diplomatic corps took part in a two-day Levuka tour which ended on Saturday. The delegation was led by the Minister for Economy and AttorneyGeneral Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development Premila Kumar and heads of missions from various countries. Ms Kumar said the historical sites were areas where urban renewal was required in order to attract more visitors to Levuka. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said many hotels have opened for Fiji’s domestic tourism market and there were many Fijians who would love to visit and see Fiji’s first capital city. He hopes that the tour would give the ambassadors the opportunity to invest in Levuka and assist Government to maintain the heritage sites. “We need this part of Fiji to be economically vibrant. We need people to be employed. You can be rest assured that we are looking at creative ways on how we can support PAFCO,” he said.

During the trip, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also launched the FJD$20 million Ovalau Solar Initiative in Bureta.

It is the first solar and agriculture project funded by the Green Climate Fund.

He said the project was made possible as a result of the Prime Minister and Government’s work for COP23 and after successfully meeting a number of requirements.

About seven hectares of land will be used for the installation of solar panels, while the land below it would be used for agricultural purposes.

He said they hoped to set up the next solar project in Taveuni.
