Kumar: Governor’s House to Have Gallery, Coffee Shop, Restaurant
Levuka’s iconic structure, the Governor’s House, will house a public gallery, coffee shop and a restaurant so that visitors can experience the atmosphere of the original home.
Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar made this announcement as she outlined Government’s plans to restore the Old Capital to its former glory.
This was during a tour over the weekend led by the Attorney-General and the Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. It also saw heads of missions and their team on the tour.
“Some of these houses in Suva are not there anymore but it is heartening to see that such wonderful structures in Levuka still exist,” Ms Kumar said. She said the Town Hall was provided funding last year and this year to paint the interior to reflect its heritage.
“There are other buildings that we would like to restore. One is the Governor’s House,” she said.
“I hope the residents of Levuka will respond to this wonderful opportunity and start their catering business from that site, when it is advertised for rental.”
For the restoration of the market which was destroyed during Tropical Cyclone Winston, Ms Kumar said UN Women was stepping in to assist.
“In the rebuilt market, there will be a women’s accommodation area, washroom and a cafeteria. Most women come from Moturiki very early in the morning, and they don’t have a place to sleep. We’ll be able to provide the accommodation they need.”
She also thanked the chief executive of the Pacific Fishing Company Limited (PAFCO) and Special Administrators of Levuka Town Council for organising the tour at the PAFCO factory.
